Location 4 – Kilranelagh

DescriptionLocation 4 on this tour is located in Kilranelagh. The viewing location we have selected is Kilranelagh Graveyard. Please be advised that the route to here is on a very rural road, so please drive with care. This location has parking which may be accessed through the gate. Please close the gate after you enter and when you leave. Thread gently and speak softly as many souls sleep here, it is a place of tranquility. The hilltop here is the location of Kilranelgh hillfort and many other monuments. The ‘Gates of Heaven’ and ‘St. Bridgets Spring Well’ are accessible within this graveyard, We recommend sitting on the grassy verges of the well to enjoy this tour. Please observe the many ancient Hawthorne’s and Holly trees as you visit also.

ViewpointSitting by St. Bridget’s Well, looking upon the hilltop located in the image above, you can observe the location where Kilranelagh Hillfort once was located. Looking to the left-hand side of this well is the location of Bae Aife, however as you can observe, it is currently covered in forestry. The forestry is private property. Turning around from the Well, located beyond the stone wall is the ancient road, known as ‘the mass path’.
