About this Website

The primary objective of this website is to raise awareness about West Wicklow and the area known as ‘The Hillfort Capital of Ireland’. Native to these parts, I have been studying this area for some years and am struck with awe and wonder at the density of National Monuments spanning from the Neolithic Ages to Early Medieval in the West Wicklow landscape. In an effort to make more people aware of these historical monuments and to get out and actually see them, I have a number of different ways for you to learn about Irelands Hillfort Capital, and the surrounding West Wicklow landscape. 

What an amazing task Mairéad has undertaken. As a local with a keen interest in archaeology of the area, I am so delighted that this work will open up these sites in such an easy, accessible and delightful way. Maith thú!!

The Hillfort Capital Audio Tour is an invaluable contribution to the history and mythology of West Wicklow. The listener is guided through the archaeological significance of these ancient sites through visual imagery, folklore, and descriptions of the ritualistic topography. Blending the ancient written sagas and oral traditions, the tour explores the existing landmarks and aligned monuments, and guides the listener back in time and through our ancient past. This is a vitally important project which as well as reconnecting us with our ancestral landscape, also encourages participation with nature which will further protect this unique area. Mairéad has provided an opportunity for everyone to share in our living past and her project is a significant and valuable addition to our locally documented history.
